The role of the Long March of 1934 in the rise to power of Mao Zedong and the Chinese Communist Party is legend. First introduced to the Western public in the 1930s by Edgar Snow in the now classic Red Star Over China, the march has been called the turning point which "won China for Mao Zedong and his Coinmunists." Harrison E. Salisbury retraced the journey in the 1985 publication
The Long March, The Untold Story.
The Incredible March is a dramatization of Snow's meeting with Mao in northern Shaanxi in 1936, during which Mao told Snow the story of the Chinese communist movement. Snow is played by Adam Cole and Mao by the Cantonese actor David Tse. From film clips, in-between meeting scenes of Snow and Mao, the video highlights various stages of the march, from the partnership between Mao and Zhu De and the failed role of the Comintern agent Otto Braun (Chinese name, Li De) are also referred to. The account does include some inaccuracies, such us calling Sun Yat-sen a communist; Sun, the founder of the Nationalist Party, did cooperate with the Chinese Communist Party but is not known to have joined the party. Overall, the film is a useful introduction to the story of the Long March.
