Lee Teng-hui was the president of the Republic of China on Taiwan from 1988 to 2000. His personal story is a mirror of modern Taiwanese society. He had been a man of many identities, and thus of many contradictions, considering himself to be first a Japanese, then a Chinese, and finally a Taiwanese. The documentary chronicles Taiwan's recent history and gives insight into present-day Taiwanese politics and the current difficulties of Taiwan-U.S.-China relations.
Public Television Service of Taiwan devoted two years to producing this insightful documentary, with in-depth interviews from Taiwan, China, Japan, and the United States. Unearthing rare historical documents and film footage, it presents a critical look at Taiwan's evolving national consciousness through its former president Lee Teng-hui, the central figure of the island's political transformation over the past two decades.
