Abstract:

Miho Nakayama stars in duel roles in this beautiful tale of love, loss, and remembrance directed by Japan's Shunji Iwai. Though her fiancee Itsuki Fujii died two years ago in a mountain climbing accident, Hiroko Watanabe (Nakayama) is unable to get on with her life. While looking through Itsuki's high school yearbook on the anniversary of his death, Hiroko, in a fit of grief, decides to write a letter to him using his old school address. She is surprised to receive a reply from a woman (also played by Nakayama) with her dead lover's name who knew Itsuki in junior high school and was teased for sharing his name. A relationship develops between the two women as they continue to exchange letters and share memories of Itsuki.
