Abstract:

"These three part series, originally broadcast on PBS, brings the history of modern China to life, with never-before-seen footage and remarkable first-hand interviews, documenting the struggle of the Chinese people to build a modern nation. This groundbreaking series provides crucial historical insight into the history and politics of emerging world power. This series includes three tapes: 1. "China in Revolution 1911-1949", describes the upheaval beginning with the fall of the last dynasty in 1911, through struggles with war-lords and foreign powers, through World War II and the bitter rivalry between the Communists and Nationalists. 2. "The Mao Years 1949-1976, tells the story of Mao Zedong and his attempts to build a new China, providing an intimate portrait of a country that, for much of that time, seemed isolated and incomprehensible. 3."Born Under the Red Flag 1976-1997", explores China's transformation after the cultural revolution and Mao's death. China became a major economic and political power in the world scene. This volume documents this newly reinvigorated country through the voices of peasants, students, political prisoners and loyal cadres.
