Abstract:

Exploding world population and the rapid growth of cities are explored in short dynamic programs ideal for sparking discussion or launching research on global issues. Six Billion People makes extensive use of maps, graphics, and illustrative film to examine population trends and the striking differences in fertility and life expectancy between industrial nations and the developing world. Examples are drawn chiefly from Japan, Mexico, India, Senegal, Iran, and China. The New Giant Cities compares and contrasts Mexico City, Bangkok, and Cairo with regard to provision of basic services, policies toward illegal settlements, and efforts to control sprawl and alleviate pollution. Grades 9 and up.
