Abstract:

This succinct overview introduces students to the origins and primary beliefs of Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, and Buddhism, placing each religion in the historical circumstances out of which it developed. Important terms are defined and contrasts drawn between such foundational concepts as the understanding of history as linear (integral to Islam, Christianity, and Judaism) and the cyclical view of time (embraced by Buddhists and Hindus).
