Based on the story "Du Shiniang Throws Jewelry Box Into The River" by famous Ming Dynasty playwright Feng Menglong. Tells the tragic story of Tu Shih-niang, the legendary Ming dynasty courtesan who sacrifices everything to be with her lover, only to be disillusioned when he sells her to a salt merchant. These themes would reappear in such western stories as Alexander Dumas' Camille and Giuseppi Verdi's opera La Traviata.
