Abstract:

Though electricity and labor-saving devices are just coming to the Indonesian island of Bali, life is enjoyable-- it seems. Much attention is paid to religion which combines elements of Hinduism, Buddhism and nature worship. Modern medicine and spiritual healing are both practiced and accepted by the islanders. Children are expected to help with farming tasks, as well as with washing clothes and cooking. Children attend school four hours a day taking nine subjects, and keep the schools clean. Tourism is big business on Bali and may threaten the traditional way of life. For now, it provides an outlet for Balinese crafts and a source of cash.
