Abstract:

SOC SCI The stated goal here is to present information that will clarify misconceptions about the Midwest's newest immigrants -- Southeast Asians and Latinos. It succeeds admirably. The producers focus on the Fox River Valley of Wisconsin, especially Green Bay and Wausau, and Iowa communities such as Storm Lake and Marshalltown. Interviews with community leaders (including those from the Southeast Asian and Latino communities), citizens -- both newcomers and longtime residents -- educators, and social service personnel add depth to the issues and show the new immigrants as complex people, most of whom want nothing more than a chance at a better life. Excellent background information is presented on what drew these immigrants to these particular areas. The producers prefer to let the "new immigrants" speak for themselves, which they do most effectively. This objective program does not gloss over the very deep problems and real prejudices that exist in these places. But it does offer hope, with these newest immigrants echoing immigrants of the previous century and bringing diversity, energy, and talent to their new communities, which are making efforts to see them as "us" instead of a population set apart. The technical quality here is good. This thought-provoking program is recommended for Midwestern libraries. One hopes the price won't keep it out of those smaller communities where it would be especially valuable.-Nancy Paul, Brandon P.L., WI
