Abstract:

"Snow Country is Shiro Toyoda's adaptation of Yasunari Kawabata's novel of the same title, written between 1934 and 1947. The film concentrates on one of the heroines, the geisha Komako. She is searching for an identity she can live with. Her conflict has to do with issues of social constraint and individual freedom. This division between tradition and modernity internalized by the heroine is a hallmark concern of this director. Komako's plight is dramatized through shifting relations with Shimamura and the other woman, the beautiful young Yoko." --Japan Society Films.
