Abstract:

This heartfelt and picturesque program reveals how geography and history have combined to make Bhutan a success story among the developing nations. Geography protected the isolated mountain country from colonial intrusion, but also encouraged centuries of bloody feudalism. This violent history created a profound commitment to the central government. Today, by royal decree, Bhutan balances reverence for ancient Buddhist traditions with an equal commitment to modern education.
