"Combining footage taken by Margaret Mead and Gregory Bateson over fifty years ago with footage shot today, this delightful video shows how the tradition of teaching Balinese children to dance is still being passed on from generation to generation. Today one can still see the training of children through repetition, imitation and forceful manipulation into the correct positions. The viewer sees that the children may go into trance during ceremonial dances, and learns that, to the Balinese, children are sacred. The video shows that even when Balinese live in the United States, the children are taught to dance. We see a master dancer and composer whose son must choose between becoming a master dancer like his father, or playing on the high school football team. It also shows how children teach dance and pass on their traditions to other children. They combine their Balinese heritage and their experiences living in the United States to create a new, multicultural dance."
