Abstract:

"This fascinating film explores the unique relationship between the pen and the sword among the traditional arts in Japan. The culture of the 'Daimyo', feudal landlords of medieval Japan who owed allegiance to the 'shogun', played a sighificant role in the development of these arts. The 'Daimyo' worked hard to defend the land during civil unrest, and were educated in the martial arts. During less violent times, they turned to more peaceful arts, providing balance to these practices. The film explores various aspects of the 'Daimyo's' artistic interests, including the tea cerecmony, 'Noh' theater, calligraphy, swordmanship, and horseback archery."
