Abstract:

"The 16th and 17th centuries were the heyday of ocean navigation by European explorers and colonizers. Portuguese, Spanish, and Dutch efforts to Christianize and establish trading relationships with the Japanese were most strikingly illustrated by the Japanese themselves in a genre the Japanese called 'Southern Barbarian' art. This program examines this art and the background against which it took shape three centuries ago. "
