"Like so many women her age, Noriko tasted independence during World War II. Now, more than five years later, persistent legacies of the war remain -- newly self-reliant young women and a scarcity of available young men. As these women age and their prospects diminish, their unmarried status confounds their families. Noriko refuses to be bullied into giving up her job and marrying just because of her age.
