Japan: Slide Units and Curriculum Units

Developed by MIT and tested by Boston Public Schools, this CD-ROM-based curriculum unit tells the story of a professor who, after 30 years of being away from Japan, returns to attend the Star Festival. During his visit, he realizes many of his assumptions about Japan were wrong and questions whether he is Japanese or American. Star Festival allows students to travel through space and time to see photos, film footage, and artifacts from the professor's childhood as well as witness scenes from contemporary Japan.

An extensive resource based on The Art Institute of Chicago's permanent installation of the arts of China, Korea, and Japan, this manual includes more than 100 pages of informative text, classroom teaching suggestions, a bibliography for teachers and young audiences, a glossary of terms written in English and Asian characters, and numerous illustrations and maps. Sixteen slides of objects on view in the galleries accompany the text. Designed to be used by teachers of all levels and as a supplement to any classroom discipline.

Castle Towns: An Introduction to Tokugawa Japan (Revised 1995)
Grades: 6-12
This curriculum unit on Tokugawa Japan (1600-1868) contains a teacher's guide, 42 slides, student activities, and supplementary materials. The unit teaches students about why and how castles were built during the Japanese feudal period and what kinds of people lived in the towns that grew up around them.

Spotlight in Japan: Continuity and Change (1994)

Twenty New York educators who participated in a study/travel program to Japan developed this curriculum guide of lesson plans on Japanese culture. The 125-page teacher guide (available in a loose-leaf binder format) is organized into five thematic chapters: geography, culture, education, social roles, literature, and language. A slide packet of 32 slides accompanies the curriculum guide.
