The Association for Asian Studies (AAS) annually hosts the premier North American conference of Asia scholars devoted to scheduled programs of scholarly papers, roundtable discussions, workshops, and panel sessions on a wide range of issues in research and teaching, and on Asian affairs in general.

Since 2011, the Asian Educational Media Service (AEMS) has organized for the conference the AAS Film Expo. During the conference, films are projected in a dedicated screening room with a schedule running from Thursday afternoon through Saturday evening. In 2013, we are providing an additional “on demand” screening area, allowing greater viewing opportunities for attendees who miss scheduled screening times.

The selection process for the conference screenings starts in the Fall when AEMS puts out a call for Asia related films produced by scholars and independent filmmakers. Criteria utilized in the selection process includes timeliness, broad appeal to the scholarly community, and examples of new field work. All films presented in the conference are listed in both the AAS Annual Meeting Program Addendum and in an AAS Film Expo booklet brochure distributed at the conference that includes contact information for the film distributors / independent filmmakers.

When possible, films are accompanied by a short Q&A with the filmmaker or film representative, in person or online. Approximately twenty-five to thirty films are selected annually for AAS Film Expo.

For films presented in the AAS film expo, AAS does not pay rental or royalty fees, nor does it charge filmmakers or distributors for publicity and exposure, and considers this program of mutual benefit to both the filmmakers, distributors and AAS members.
